History
Kremnica is one of the medieval cities that, in its glory days, were in the center of attention of the monarchs, who tried to conquer and seize it for its rich gold mines. Historians assume that gold and silver have been mined here since the 10th century but the real boom only took place at the beginning of the 14th century. In 1328, the Hungarian king Karol Róbert of Anjou granted it the privilege of a free royal mining and minting town. He founded a mint here. It’s golden ducats, the so-called florins, were among the most valuable and sought-after coins in Europe. The Kremnica Mint is one of the oldest enterprises of its kind in the world and it operates continuously until today. In 2011 it became part of the European cultural heritage.
